Indian Prime Minister Congratulates President Hakainde Hichilema on Re‑Election

India’s Prime Minister extended formal congratulations to Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema after his successful re‑election, highlighting the deepening diplomatic and economic ties between the two Commonwealth nations.

In a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office, India’s head of government praised President Hakainde Hichilema on securing a second term as the head of state of Zambia. The message emphasized the shared commitment to democratic principles, regional stability, and the continued partnership that has expanded under Hichilema’s leadership. The congratulatory note arrived shortly after Zambia’s electoral commission announced the final results, confirming Hichilema’s victory and marking another peaceful transfer of power in the country’s recent political history.

The exchange comes at a time when India and Zambia are seeking to deepen cooperation across a range of sectors. Since the inauguration of the current Zambian administration, bilateral trade has shown steady growth, with India importing Zambian copper and other minerals while exporting pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, and information‑technology services. Both governments have also signed memoranda of understanding to boost collaboration in renewable energy, agriculture, and capacity‑building initiatives, reflecting a broader Indian strategy to strengthen ties with African economies. In addition, the two nations, as members of the Commonwealth, regularly engage in multilateral forums to address issues such as climate change, health security, and youth empowerment.

Looking ahead, the Prime Minister’s message underscored a mutual desire to expand joint ventures, particularly in mining technology, digital infrastructure, and skill development programs that can support Zambia’s economic diversification agenda. Analysts note that Hichilema’s re‑election, buoyed by his reform‑focused first term, presents an opportunity for India to deepen its strategic footprint in Southern Africa while contributing to Zambia’s aspirations for sustainable growth and inclusive development.
