Hundreds of activists protest in Ubaal, Welcome over alleged slurs against MLA Kuldeep Kumar in the assembly.
Dalit community’s outrage surfaces on Delhi streets on Friday over alleged slurs against MLA Kuldeep Kumar by Cabinet Minister Pravesh Verma.
Hundreds of workers beneath the Welcome Metro Station staged a vigorous protest, blackening the mouth of a dummy of Pravesh Verma and later blew out the dummy to register their protest.
The protesters said that the assembly is the highest platform of democracy and that using alleged offensive language towards an elected representative there is a very serious matter. They alleged that this incident has hurt the sentiments of the Dalit community and they are demanding a public apology.
During the protest, slogans such as “Pravesh Verma, apologize” resonated. Seeing the growing number of protesters, a heavy police presence was deployed on site. The protest also affected traffic on Main GT Road, resulting in a long traffic jam on the street.
If no apology, the movement will intensify.
During the protest, Sanjay Gahlot said that until Pravesh Verma apologizes to the Dalit community, the movement will continue. He warned that in the coming days the protest would be expanded further and that if necessary, the residence of Pravesh Verma would be surrounded. He said that this fight is not for one individual, but a fight for respect and social dignity.
Workers arriving from far distances, showing unity
In the protest, workers from various parts of Delhi, belonging to the Dalit community, arrived in large numbers. The workers united to register their protest and said that they would not stay silent on any issue related to the society’s honor.
The political atmosphere has heated up after the protest. Now the focus is on how Pravesh Verma will respond to the entire controversy and whether any response will emerge to the Dalit community’s demand for an apology.
